Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) – When AI agents conclude contracts
AI agents discover products, negotiate terms and conclude transactions independently. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) – developed by Google and Shopify, amongst others – establishes the first technical standard for this, intended to be the ‘TCP/IP of commerce’

What’s it all about?
The UCP is an open-source standard that enables AI agents to communicate directly and in a structured manner with retailers’ back-ends – from product search and shopping basket management right through to tokenised payment. Instead of ‘user-to-HTML’, we are moving towards ‘agent-to-agent’ commerce.
